5 Days Tanzania Walking Safari
Walking safaris are the purest form of safari. Walking in Tanzania is completely different from game driving. On foot, you are a participant in the world of wildlife rather than a spectator, a thrilling and unbeatable safari experience. Walking is only available in certain areas and can be short day walks back to the same camp or can be mobile where the crew packs up your camp and move it for you – greeting you at the end of your day’s walking journey with sundowners.
Trekking is the next level of the wild where you backpack through the wilderness and camp in a new location each night. Tents are lightweight, the team is very few so the focus is on immersion, getting stuck in, and wilderness rather than a luxury. While animals will generally ignore you in a vehicle, they see you as another type of animal when you are on foot. Getting up close and personal with wildlife is a rush of excitement. Walking is also a great way to appreciate the smaller wildlife, which can’t be so easily seen from a vehicle.
You’ll be met at Kilimanjaro International Airport by our Mowgli Safari Tours guide and transferred to the hotel.
After breakfast, we’ll drive to Lake Manyara National Park. The national park coverage is 127 square miles (329 km²) and the lake’s alkaline waters cover approximately 89 square miles (231 km²). Giant fig trees and mahogany trees can be seen in the groundwater forest immediately around the park gates. While mostly known for its famous tree-climbing lions and baboons, Lake Manyara and its environment are also home to herbivores such as hippos, impalas, elephants, wildebeests, buffalo, warthogs, and giraffes.
After an early breakfast departs from Manyara and drives to the endless plains of the Serengeti via Ngorongoro Crater. Serengeti is the oldest and most popular national park in Tanzania in particular for its annual migration of wildebeest with zebra and Thomson gazelle joining the trek for fresh grazing. Other wildlife found in Serengeti includes buffalo, giraffe, eland, topi, kongoni, impala, Grant’s gazelle, lion, cheetah, leopard, and African jackal.
After breakfast continues with a full day of migration viewing in Serengeti National Park. We’ll take a packed lunch to maximize our game viewing time. Serengeti National Park is widely regarded as the best wildlife reserve in Africa due to its density of predators and prey as well as the great wildebeest migration so make sure your camera batteries are fully charged as there will be plenty of photo opportunities.
After breakfast and with packed lunches at the ready, we’ll drive to Ngorongoro Conservation Area and descend into the crater for game viewing. The main feature of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is the Ngorongoro Crater – a large, unbroken, unflooded volcanic caldera. Animal populations in the crater include most of the species found in East Africa such as lion, elephant, zebra, rhino, leopard, buffalo, gazelle, wildebeest, hippo, and many different bird species so expect to see wildlife galore. After an exciting day with all that wildlife, you’ll be driven to Arusha airport for departure
