The Lake Eyasi (Hadzabe and Datoga) Cultural Day Trip tour provides a rare chance to explore the traditional homeland of the Hadzabe people, one of the last remaining hunter-gatherer tribes in the world. You’ll also have the opportunity to meet their neighbors, the Datoga. The Hadzabe live in a way that has remained remarkably unchanged for 10,000 years, growing no food, raising no livestock, and existing without rules or calendars. Their way of life invites us to reflect on what we might have forgotten in our modern world.
DAY 1 TRIP TO EYASI
Early in the morning, we will pick you from your hotel in Arusha for a hands-on hunting experience with the Hadzabe and Datoga tribes. This is an authentic experience, not a performance; the Hadzabe rely on these traditional techniques for survival. You’ll need to stay attentive and sometimes quiet as they demonstrate their use of locally made poisons to incapacitate the animals they depend on.
Next, you’ll meet the Hadzabe, a remarkable hunter-gatherer tribe living along the shores of Lake Eyasi, as well as their Nilotic-speaking neighbors, the Datoga. During your visit, you’ll tour their homesteads, gain insights into their way of life, learn about animal tracking and medicinal plants, and much more. There will also be opportunities to observe wildlife and a variety of bird species during arranged walks around the lake.
In the late afternoon, we will return to Arusha.
