Wildebeest Migration Safari

Our 7-Day Great Serengeti Migration Safari is expertly crafted to maximize your chances of witnessing the iconic Serengeti Wildebeest Migration. The itinerary is strategically designed to encompass both the Lobo area, situated north of the central Serengeti National Park, and the Wagakuria area in the remote northern Serengeti National Park, where the wildebeest migration is most active from August to October. To optimize your game viewing experience and minimize travel time, you’ll fly directly from the Serengeti National Park back to Arusha town. Additionally, the itinerary includes a visit to the renowned Ngorongoro Crater. The Serengeti wildebeest migration is Tanzania’s great migration and happens every year where large numbers of wildebeests(over 2 million) and other animals like the grant’s gazelles, impalas, zebras(over 200,000), elands, and Thomson’s gazelles migrate from the Serengeti plains in Tanzania to the Masai Mara in Kenya. They move clockwise over 1,800 miles annually which makes their migration easy to predict. They mainly migrate in search of better water quality and new grazing grasslands.

DAY 1 ARRIVAL IN ARUSHA

Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, a senior safari guide will warmly welcome you and drive you to your hotel in Arusha for dinner and an overnight stay.

Arusha, the capital of the Arusha Region in northern Tanzania, is a vibrant city with a population of 416,442, plus 323,198 in the surrounding Arusha District. Nestled below Mount Meru on the eastern edge of the Great Rift Valley's eastern branch, Arusha enjoys a temperate climate. Its strategic location offers convenient access to renowned destinations such as Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Lake Manyara National Park, Olduvai Gorge, Tarangire National Park, Mount Kilimanjaro, and Arusha National Park on Mount Meru.

DAY 2 ARUSHA-NGORONGORO

After breakfast, you’ll set off for the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Upon arrival, you’ll enjoy lunch at the lodge before descending over 600 meters into the crater to experience its rich wildlife.

The Ngorongoro Crater, with its year-round water supply and abundant fodder, supports a diverse array of animals, including herds of wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, eland, warthog, hippo, and giant African elephants. The park is also renowned for its dense population of predators, such as lions, hyenas, jackals, cheetahs, and the elusive leopard, which can be challenging to spot. We will also visit Lake Magadi, a large shallow alkaline lake in the southwestern corner of the crater, known for its impressive flocks of flamingos, hippos, and various other water birds.

DAY 3 NGORONGORO-SERENGETI

After breakfast, we’ll journey to the heart of wild Africa – the Serengeti National Park, with its endless plains stretching as far as the eye can see. Our destination is the Lobo area, situated just north of the Seronera region in central Serengeti National Park. This area is a key location for the wildebeest migration, which typically passes through Lobo around July/August on its way to Kenya’s Masai Mara Game Reserve, and again in late October/November as it heads south towards the Serengeti’s southern plains.

We’ll arrive in time for lunch, followed by an afternoon game drive in the Serengeti National Park.

DAY 4 SERENGETI (SERONERA)

After breakfast, you’ll embark on a full day of game driving in the park. The Lobo area and Grumeti River region are renowned for their year-round resident wildlife. You can expect to see a variety of non-migrating animals, including elephants, buffalo, gazelles, zebras, lions, leopards, and cheetahs, all of which are present throughout the year. The game viewing here is exceptional, offering opportunities to track wildlife for extended periods without encountering other vehicles—truly a secluded gem of the Serengeti Plains.

The riverine landscape is dotted with magnificent trees, and bird enthusiasts will enjoy spotting species like kingfishers and fish eagles.

DAY 5 SERENGETI CENTRAL AND NOTHERN (KOGATENDE)

After breakfast, enjoy a full day game drive in the Wagakuria area. Resident wildlife numbers are exceptionally high in this area of the park, with prides of lion up to 30 strong, however, from August to October the area turns into a wildlife paradise. The key feature is the Mara River and it is not uncommon to see the herds cross the Mara River north on one day and then back south a few days later. Please take note –Finding a crossing is very difficult and is sometimes a matter of luck. A herd can be seen next to river and only decide to cross or not cross until a couple of days later. This area is a stunning region with kopjes, woodland, riverine vegetation and open plains, similar to Kenya’s Masai Mara Game Reserve.

DAY 6 SERENGETI

After breakfast, we’ll journey to the far northern reaches of Serengeti National Park, known as the Wagakuria area. En route from Lobo, we’ll embark on a game drive, where you may encounter sightings of giraffes, plains game, and herds of buffalo and elephants as we head north.

We’ll arrive in time for lunch at the lodge, and afterward, we’ll enjoy an afternoon game drive in the Wagakuria area. From August to October, this region is a prime spot for witnessing the wildebeest migration, depending on rainfall patterns. The Mara River, which runs through the northern Serengeti, presents one of the most dramatic obstacles of the migration. Observing the thrilling spectacle of wildebeest crossing the Mara River is an unforgettable experience.

DAY 7 SERENGETI KOGATENDE-ARUSHA

After breakfast at the camp, we’ll set off for Kogatende Airstrip, enjoying a game drive en route. It is customary to tip the guide around $20 to $30 per day.

Around mid-morning, you’ll board a scheduled flight from Kogatende Airstrip to Arusha Airport. Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted by our driver who will transfer you to Arusha town. After lunch, we will conclude our African safari adventure. You’ll be taken to your hotel, marking the end of our safari services.
